Connie and I arrived at JFK Airport in New York at 6:30 this morning Eastern time--3:30 for Portlanders. An uneventful flight. I managed to get some sleep; Connie didn't. Weather here is cool, cloudy, showery.
The building we entered following our flight was basically open to the elements. Dozens of sparrows were in the terminal, flying and twittering in the high ceiling and occasionally swooping down on people--Connie included.
Question: how much luggage should one take on an 8-week trip overseas? In our case, a single overnight bag plus a backpack. We're following the gospel according to travel guru Rick Steves, whose programs you may have seen on public television. He says it's better to pack light and do laundry frequently, rather than be weighed down by large, heavy suitcases.
We have the whole day to spend at JFK. Perhaps we'll stretch out on the floor at an empty gate and get some sleep. Or see if there's a worship service somewhere in the airport. Our flight leaves at 7:30 p.m. The fun part is that 24 hours from now we'll be in Jerusalem!
